If only we could see all this tree has lived through...
The Rainforest Flying Squad is defending some of the last remaining stands of old-growth forest in British Columbia. This includes the Fairy Creek watershed on Vancouver Island.
Many of the trees here are over a thousand years old. These ancient ecosystems are globally one of the most valuable climate resiliency assets and support biodiversity in a way that second- and third-growth tree farms can’t.
This gorgeous painting by Victoria-based artist Jeremy Hernd was a labour of love. It was created on-site in the Fairy Creek watershed over many days, thanks to the Eden Grove Artists in Residence Program.

Eden Grove Artist in Residence Program
The Eden Grove Artist in Residence program began in March 2021. Eden Grove is a 30-hectare area of unprotected old-growth forest a short walk away from the famous tree Big Lonely Doug, near Port Renfrew, BC on unceded Pacheedaht territory. Participating artists have the unique opportunity to be immersed in this ancient rainforest ecosystem, while also bearing witness to the frontlines of the forest protection movement and building relationships with the local community.

Ancient Rainforests Under Threat
Ancient temperate rainforest ecosystems sequester more carbon than any other forest on Earth, and are home to countless threatened life forms. Less than 2.7% remains of the original rainforests in BC. At the current rate of cut, all old-growth forests outside of existing parks could be gone by 2026.
In August 2020, the Rainforest Flying Squad established a protection camp to stop logging company Teal Jones from building roads into Fairy Creek; the last intact old-growth valley outside of a park on Southern Vancouver Island. At the time of writing, there are 5 camps throughout Tree Farm License 46 and 44. On April 1st, 2021, the BC Supreme Court granted Teal Jones a court injunction, however, the RCMP have not yet begun arrests. The Rainforest Flying Squad stands with Elder Bill Jones and other Pacheedaht who are asserting their right to protect ancient forests on their territory for future generations. Territory Acknowledgement
Eden Grove Artist in Residence respectfully acknowledges that we are located on the unceded territories of the Pacheedaht Nation. We are grateful for the opportunity to draw inspiration from the ancient forests. We seek to listen, learn and honour Pacheedaht’s ongoing role as stewards of their lands.
